He was born Jean Francois Gravelet in St. Omer France and attended Ecole de Gymanse in Lyon. His antics and showmanship gained him notoriety. In 1859 he crossed the Niagara Falls on a tightrope stretched from the American side to the Canadian side. He repeated this feat several times although adding new components to the act. One trip he carried a man on his back, another trip he was blindfolded, another he pushed a wheelbarrow and one trip he did on stilts.
